The Biden/Harris Victory Rally commenced. It felt like everyone had been holding their breath. Holding their breathe for the last four years. Finally, everyone could breathe again.
On November 7th, I drove down Colfax Avenue towards the Capital Building in Denver. If anything was going to happen, it was going to happen there.
After a murder…
Ever since May, after George Floyd’s murder, the heart of Denver’s government took center stage for protests and riots, celebrations and parades. The Biden/Harris rally would prove to be no different. Cyclone fences surrounded the concrete and granite buildings now laden with graffiti from months of unrest. The park, also blocked off from the public now pushed the mass of homeless tents further onto the sidewalk and precariously close to the busy intersection. I’ve been shooting here for the last few months photographing the frequent protests and subsequent property damage. Consequently, today I wasn’t going to get to the Capital.
Colfax was blocked and a Black & White directed me south on Cherokee Street, past the SWAT team and three blocks down where I was able to find parking. Getting out of my car, I grabbed my gear and followed the noise east on 12th towards Lincoln. Cars were lined up for blocks and noise was getting louder and louder. Horns were honking, people were yelling and carrying signs. This parade stretched for four city blocks and back again. And the party was just getting started.
Diversity wins the day…
I shot a number of images of these young Latina girls. Their excitement was so infectious even though I’m not sure, that at their age, they truly understand the magnitude of what has happened for them and their families. Jan 21, will see the full reinstatement of the Dreamers Act and a dismantling of the horrendous immigration policies of the Trump administration. It can’t happen soon enough. As a guy who spends a lot of time in Mexico I am so thrilled to see the changes coming for the wonderful people from Latin America who have risked their lives to come to our country.
Now this is what I call celebrating!
