My favorite place to shoot personal work is along the Southern California Coast. The feeling and the mood derived from the natural beauty and athleticism of the California Surf Culture always inspires me to create new work. I believe that a photographer needs to find locations that create that kind of personal inspiration to do their best work.

The ocean is that place for me!

Shooting along the California Coast

As a San Diego Lifestyle Photographer for over 25 years, I have had the opportunity to shoot all over the world. My favorite place to shoot personal work is along the Southern California Coast. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy these six stunning images of the California Surf Culture.

The feeling and the mood derived from the natural beauty and athleticism of the California lifestyle always inspires me to create new work. Above all, I believe that a photographer needs to find locations that create that kind of personal inspiration to do their best work. This series is a perfect example of that inspiration.

Early morning meditation

Early mornings along the coast in Carlsbad, CA are a wonderful time to get out and shoot. It’s still quiet. Very few people are out except for the surfers and the joggers. In my opinion, it’s a glorious opportunity to capture beautiful pictures. On a clear day, the light is always gorgeous as the sun comes up. Especially in the fall. The sun stays low in the sky most of the day and I can shoot as long as I want.

With inspirational music coming through my headphones I can completely lose track of time. Slipping into a state of flow, nothing interferes with the process of making pictures. As a result, the noise and distraction that typically interrupts my concentration during the day just quietly disappears. Additionally, it’s really a meditation practice but only better. Better than meditation because in addition to the peace of mind that it produces I usually come away with new images.

Along the way…

I’ll usually spend anywhere from one to four hours capturing images when I’m out shooting along the coast. Therefore, it’s not hard to completely lose track of time. I often start these mornings at Terramar Surf Beach and head north till I reach the boardwalk a couple of miles away. The great thing about this route is that I can start photographing surfers at sunrise, volleyball mid-morning and runners and beach goers by the time I turn around at the Harbor Fish Cafe.
